Developing the habit of reading can be quite hard especially if you don’t know where to start. One of the best advice I have ever gotten is from my professor who said,
“Start with your favourite genre. Look at your favourite movies and start with books that are similar.”
So here are some suggestions. This list contains authors from different genres who are easy to read and are enjoyable.
Y/A romance : Stephanie Perkins’s books Anna and the French Kiss, Lola and the Boy Next Door and Isla and the Happily Ever After are light hearted and fast paced which makes it a wonderful introduction into Y/A romance.
Chick-lit : There is something magical in the stories that Cecilia Ahern weaves. There are many to dive into.My personal favourites are If You Could See Me Now and A Hundred Names.
Detective : While The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes maybe some of the best detective novels written, the undisputed Queen of crime fiction is Agatha Christie.
(I would suggest starting with The Crooked House)
For readers who find Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle’s writing a little too old fashioned, Robert Galbraith’s aka J K Rowling’s books would be a good start.
Dystopian Y/A : This section isn’t really necessary here as (almost) everyone knows about The Hunger Games series, The Divergent series and the Maze Runner series.
Fantasy : For all those who loved Harry Potter (everyone, duh) and want more magical realms to explore, Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments will be a delightful experience.A
Anythingby Rick Riordan is fantastic especially for all those who love mythology.
If there are other genres you want suggestions in please leave it in the comments or just mention your favourite movies and I’ll be happy to help.
